He founded his own business, Bromstad Studio, after being put on leave as a Disney illustrator. Bromstad Studio designs fantasy bedrooms for children. He moved to Miami Beach on the advice of a friend and auditioned for HGTV’s Design Star, a reality show competition to find a host for a new show on the HGTV cable network.

Bromstad competed against nine other potential designers on Design Star, earning the grand prize of a car and the opportunity to host his own HGTV show. He stated in the 23rd episode of Color Splash that HGTV chose the second series of 26 episodes.

Bromstad became the spokesperson for Mythic Paint in 2008. He also has a soft spot for Miele home appliances. HGTV Design Star, where he has been a mentor since Season 6 and host since Season 7, HGTV’s Beach Flip, and HGTV’s My Lottery Dream Home are his three series.
