Wilkes’ interest in weather began when he was in fourth grade. When he was a kid growing up on Chicago’s far south side, a blizzard in 1979 held him out of school for two weeks! This piqued his interest in weather, which he maintains to this day. Also, he is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. He obtained his Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association in August of 1996.
Wilkes started his career as the chief meteorologist at WSJV-TV in Elkhart, Indiana, which is now the Fox Affiliate for their 6 and 10 p.m. shows. He made, wrote, and hosted a documentary about the Palm Sunday tornadoes that ripped through South Bend in April of 1965 during his time at WSJV.
He has received various awards during his tenure in Indianapolis. In 1996, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored him with an Emmy for his extreme weather special “Blown Away,” which he presented and co-produced. Also, he has hosted two other extreme weather specials, including the Emmy-winning “Ahead of the Storm” in 2001.
Wilkes not only loves forecasting the weather, but he also enjoys teaching. He can be seen visiting central Indiana schools during the year when he is not in front of the camera. He’s still involved in his neighborhood, often donating his time and talents to a variety of charitable organizations.
