Reubens grew up in Sarasota, Florida, where he attended Sarasota High School and became interested in theater and comedy. He studied drama at Boston University and California Institute of the Arts before joining The Groundlings in Los Angeles.

In the early 1980s, Paul Reubens created the character Pee-wee Herman, a childlike, eccentric, and bow-tied persona with a distinctive high-pitched voice. Pee-wee Herman quickly became a pop culture sensation through a stage show, television series, and feature films.

Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

They met on the set of Batman Returns (1992), where Reubens played the Penguin’s father and Mazar played his mother.
