Nia DaCosta Biography

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Nia DaCosta is an American screenwriter and director who is best known for her breakout film Little Woods (2019).

She has also directed the British television series Top Boy and she is also the director of Candyman (2020) reboot.

Since when she was young, DaCosta knew she wanted to be a writer. However, after watching Apocalypse Now she became more interested with film making as well.

DaCosta was inspired by film directors like Martin Scorsese, Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola.

Nia DaCosta Education

After discovering her love for film making, DaCosta decided to follow her dream and enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. while there, she actually met Martin Scorsese, her inspiration, while working as a TV production assistant.

Nia DaCosta Little Woods

After completing school and working as a TV production assistant, DaCosta wrote a script for Little Woods and her script was one of the 12 projects chosen for the 2015 Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs. She helped fund the film through Kickstarter with the help of 72 backers who eventually raised $5,100.

Nia DaCosta Candyman

DaCosta was chosen to direct what has been described as a spiritual sequel of the original Candyman (1992). Candyman is being produced by Jordan Peele through Monkeypaw productions.

Peele cited the original as “a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre.” Starring will be Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, while Tony Todd will be returning as the film’s titular villain.

The film will be released by Universal Pictures in theatres on June 12, 2020.
