Dennis Murphy is an American award-winning television journalist. He is best known for his regularly contributing to NBC News, NBC Nightly News, Dateline NBC, The Today Show, and NBC News at Sunrise.

Dennis Murphy Career

Murphy started off his career as a desk assistant at WCBS-TV in New York. He later worked as an assignment editor, producer, and reporter at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. He then moved to KING-TV, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, Washington as a reporter.

Murphy has been able to cover major stories for NBC News from over 50 countries. The stories include; wars in the Persian Gulf and Central America; the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the Berlin Wall; and the recent war on terror in Afghanistan.

In 1982, he became NBC News’ correspondent at the Burbank bureau. He reported on stories including; the invasion of Grenada, civil war in Nicaragua and El Salvador, a deadly volcanic eruption in Colombia, and drug lords.

In 1994, he became a correspondent for Dateline NBC.  In 2000, he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his report on Hurricane Floyd. He also received the Clarion Award for a spot news story on the Oklahoma City bombing.

In 1999, Dennis received a Harry Chapin Media Award, Emmy Award, Clarion Award, and a National Headliner Award for his story on children in the U.S. working as migrant laborers on farms. The story was titled “Children of the Harvest”.

Dennis also worked as a chief foreign correspondent for Today in NBC’s London bureau. His major stories were; the funerals of the Ayatollah, the revolutions of Eastern Europe in 1989, German unification, and the last days of Margaret Thatcher, and Emperor Hirohito.
