Carole King Biography

Carole King Klein is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and musician. She started her career in 1958 as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building. She became the most influential female songwriter after writing and co-writing over 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Out of her 25 solo albums, her most successful album is Tapestry. It topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and also remained on the charts for more than six years. She is a four Grammy Award winner. She has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter.

King learned how to play the piano and music theory from her mother.

Carole King James Taylor

King met James Taylor while at Laurel Canyon. Taylor played acoustic guitar and provided backing vocals in King’s first solo album Writer in 1970. James Taylor was also enlisted in King’s 1976 studio album Thoroughbred. In 2010, James Taylor and Carole staged their Troubadour Reunion Tour together. In addition, the two performed after the Boston Marathon bombing.

Carole King Husband

King’s first husband was Gerry Goffin who she met while attending Queens College. The two became songwriting partners. They married in a Jewish ceremony in Long Island in August 1959. This was after she became pregnant with their first daughter Louise. They divorced in 1968.

She got married to her second husband Charles Leakey in 1970 and got divorced in 1976. Her third husband was Rick Evers from 1977 to 1978 when he died. In 1982, she married Rick Sorenson. They divorced in 1989. Carole has four children; musicians Louise Goffin and Sherry Goffin Kondor, artist Molly Larkey and Levi Larkey.

Carole King Tapestry

In 1971, King released her album Tapestry. The album featured new compositions and reinterpretations of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” It topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and also remained on the charts for more than six years. It was also awarded four Grammy Awards.

In 1971, she also released Carole King: Music, and in 1972 she released Rhymes and Reasons followed by Fantasy. King’s other album Wrap Around Joy was released in September 1974 and in 1976 she released Thoroughbred. Her last contract with Ode Label was in 1976.

In 1977, she released her new album with a new label distributed by Capitol Records. The album titled Simple Things also featured Rick Evers and was Gold-certified. In 1982, she moved to Atlantic Records and released One to One and Speeding Time.

King wrote and performed “Care-A-Lot”, the theme to The Care Bears Movie in 1985. In 1989, King recorded City Streets with Capitol Records. In 1993, she released Color of your Dreams. King released her title track “Love Makes the World” for her studio album in 2001.

She released the album on her own label, Rockingale which was distributed by Koch Records. In July 2004, she launched Living Room Tour at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. King and James Taylor had their Troubadour Reunion Tour in 2010.

During the tour, King was able to release two albums “The Essential Carole King” and Live at the Troubadour. She released her Christmas album A Holiday Carole in 2011. In April 2012, King published her autobiography, A Natural Woman: A Memoir. King announced her retirement from music in May 2012.

Carole received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2012. As an actress, she has appeared in various movies and tv shows. She appeared as the title character in the animation Really Rosie. Further credits are; Faerie Tale Theatre, Bionic Boy, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
