Jerel revealed to The Voice judges that he was brought up playing in nursing homes with his grandmother. He also told the coaches that he plays in the church as well after John Legend noted that he heard it in the way Jerel played and in the way he sang.
Jerel also does song covers on his Instagram account.
Mike Jerel The Voice Audition
During his audition, Jerel played his own rendition of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.” He got a four-chair turn from the coaches, with John Legend and Nick Jonas turning within the very first note he sang.
John Legen was very impressed by how Jerel sang telling him that; ” Everything you did was done with such a level of confidence, note for note, you had a plan. You knew where you wanted to go and your voice had so much fire.”
“I grew up playing in church, I grew up singing with my grandmother. Mike I would love to coach you, we are gonna go far in this competition,” John Legend added.
Coach Kelly Clarkson also noted how talented Jerel is saying; ” You are very talented. I love all those runs, it was effortless. You showed us all that. So I cannot wait to see what you show us in the Battles, in the Knockouts; It’s gonna be very incredible.
” I didn’t think that was you, Mike,” Coach Blake Shelton told him. ” I thought it was a girl singing.” Blake went on to ask the rest of the coaches if any one of them thought that it was a girl singing. He, however, went on to note how incredible Mike’s voice is. ” You were singing notes in a place in your voice that is incredible. ”
“That is what I love about this show. Everything that happened to me when I turned around was a shock,” Blake went on. ” And I think that what you’re gonna do every time you get on this stage, man, is blow people away.”
Coach Nick Jonas was also impressed with mike and was asking him to choose him as his coach.
