His first feature film was Going for Baroque (1998); a comedy about a struggling musician who inherits a baroque orchestra. He also directed Bubba and Ike (1998); a road movie starring Billy Bob Thornton and Peter Fonda.
In 2008, Sudler-Smith made his breakthrough with Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston. This is a documentary about the legendary fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick. The film featured interviews with celebrities such as Liza Minnelli, Anjelica Huston, Diane von Furstenberg, and Andy Warhol. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received positive reviews from critics.
