Tom Hammond born Thomas Taylor Hammond is an American Sportscaster known for working with NBC Sports since 1984. He has covered the Thoroughbred Racing on NBC, Notre Dame Football on NBC from 1992-2012, and NFL on NBC from 1985-2011.

Hammond began his career as a sports director at WVLK Radio. He moved to WLEX in 1970. In 1980, he became a play-by-play announcer for Southeastern Conference basketball games by TVS. He was also a play-by-play commentator for SPI/Lorimar and Raycom Sports.

Hammond joined NBC Sports in 1984. He started as a co-host of the inaugural Breeders’ Cup. He became the main host of Thoroughbred racing on NBC. Hammond later became NBC’s play by play voice for Notre Dame football coverage. Hammond also lead play by play commentator for The AFL on NBC.

Through the years at NBC he has covered Olympic Games, and track and field. He was the main commentator for figure skating and ice dancing at the winter Olympics. Hammond was the lead play by play candidate Sunday night NFL coverage but eventually lost to ABC announcer Al Michaels.

Hammond called NBC’s secondary Saturday Wild Card playoff game each year including Chiefs-Colts in January 2007, Redskins-Seahawks in 2008, and Falcons-Cardinals in 2009. In 2007, he filled in for Bryant Gumbel as play-by-play announcer on the NFL Network.

In 2009 and 2010, he was part of the anouncing team on the Madden NFL video game and Madden NFL 10. He has also commented for The NBA on NBC and The NFL on NBC. In addition, he called gymnastics, figure skating, the WNBA, the Orange Bowl and college basketball.

Hammond has won multiple emmy awards for coverage of the 1992 Breeder’s Cup, sports broadcasting in 1988 and Olympics coverage of track and field and diving. He is a receiver of the horse race broadcasting’s top honor, and the Eclipse Award (Media category), in 1984 and 1996.
