A native of North Valley, New Mexico, Steven Baca has been identified as the man who shot a protester at Albuquerque New Mexico on June 15, 2020.

Steven Baca City Council
Baca was running for the Albuquerque City Council to represent District 2 in New Mexico. He however lost in the general election on November 5, 2019.
Steven Baca Albuquerque Shooting
The shooting happened on June 15, 2020, during protests that were ongoing at Albuquerque. The protesters wanted the statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate removed. However, members of the heavily armed New Mexico Civil Guard tried to protect it.

It was during these altercations, that Baca shot a protester. After the shooting, the protestors can be seen in a video trying to help the victim, while militia members who were armed, surrounded the shooter.
The victim was rushed to the hospital although his condition is still unknown.
Albuquerque Police Department
After the shooting, Albuquerque Police Department’s spokesperson, Gilbert Gallegos confirmed that one man had been shot and was being transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Police also detained several members of the militia group called the New Mexico Civil Guard.
Steven Baca Mayor’s Statement
Tim Keller, Albuquerque, New Mexico Mayor, released a statement that read; “The shooting tonight was a tragic, outrageous and unacceptable act of violence and it has no place in our city.
“Our diverse community will not be deterred by acts meant to divide or silence us. Our hearts go out the victim, his family, and witnesses whose lives were needlessly threatened tonight.”
