A native of Wimbledon, Southwest London, Nicholas Watt is a British journalist working as a political editor of the BBC’s Newsnight.
Watt went to King’s College School in Wimbledon. Later between 1986 and 1989, he studied history at the University of York. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Journalism Studies at the University of Wales.

In 1997, Watt was appointed as a political correspondent for The Times. A year later, he joined The Guardian where he was European editor and chief political correspondent. Watt also served as the acting political editor of The Observer between 2007 and 2008.
He left the Guardian in 2016 for Newsnight on BBC Two where he would work as a political editor replacing Allegra Stratton.
It was reported that a number of BBC journalists were annoyed with the director of BBC News, James Harding, appointing BBC posts to figures with backgrounds in the newspaper industry, including Watt.
