Mudd-Ruth is the daughter of the late Roger Mudd and Emma Jeanne Spears Mudd. Her father was an American broadcast journalist who was a correspondent and anchor for CBS News and NBC News.

He was also the primary anchor for The History Channel and was weekend and weekday substitute anchor for the CBS Evening News. Roger was also the co-anchor of the weekday NBC Nightly News, and the host of the NBC-TV Meet the Press and American Almanac TV programs.

Her mother, Emma Jeanne Spears died in 2011 while her father Roger died on March 9, 2021, at the age of 93. He died at his home in McLean from complications of kidney failure.

Mudd Ruth has three siblings; all brothers. Their names are Daniel H. Mudd, the former CEO of Fortress Investment Group LLC and the former CEO of Fannie Mae.

Her other brother is Jonathan Mudd, a singer and songwriter and the third brother is Matthew Hudd.
