Ma’Khia Bryant Biography

A resident of Columbus Ohio, Ma’Khia Bryant was a 16-year-old black teenage girl who was shot and killed by a Columbus, Ohio, police officer.

Bryant was a foster child under Franklin County Children’s Services. “Ma’Khia was a foster child, who was under the care of Franklin County Children Services. This was a tragic incident and FCCS is continuing its involvement with the family throughout this difficult time, ”  the FCCS said in a statement.

Bryant was 16 years old at the time of his untimely demise. Earlier reports released said she was 15 but it was later confirmed by her mother that she was 16 years old.

Bryant is the daughter of Paula Bryant. Describing her daughter, Paula said that she was a very loving, peaceful little girl. “Ma’Khia had a motherly nature about her. She promoted peace.”

“That’s something that I want to always be remembered,” Paula said.

Paula also went on to say that “This shouldn’t have happened,” and she wants answers. She also revealed that Ma’Khia who had been staying at a foster home was “looking forward to coming home”.

Ma’Khia Bryant Shooting

Bryant was shot and killed on April 20, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio. Columbus police have produced bodycam footage from the scene.

Columbus Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said that they received a 911 call from someone who reported that women were trying to stab them and then hung up.

Body Cam footage shows an officer emerging from the vehicle as Bryant appears to chase someone, who falls onto the sidewalk. She then turns to the other girl and takes a swing. The officer goes ahead to shoot at Ma’khia who falls to the ground.

Ma’khia’s aunt, Hazel Bryant, told the Columbus Dispatch that her niece got into a fight with another person at her foster home. She said that Ma’khia had a knife but dropped it before the officer shot her.

The interim chief of Columbus Police, Mike Woods, said an inquiry was being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“At the conclusion of that investigation, the divisional police will conduct an administrative review of the actions of this officer and all officers at scene. This is a tragic incident for all involved, but especially for the family of the female.”

Andrew Ginther, Columbus Mayor, described it as a “horrible, heart-breaking ” and a “tragic day in the city”. He also went on to say; “We know, based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community – but a family is grieving tonight.”
