Blow became the first rapper to be signed by a major label, Mercury, when he was twenty years old, and released “Christmas Rappin'” in 1979. It became one of the first commercially successful hip-hop songs, selling over 400,000 copies. For the next eleven years, he released ten albums. He was his first release, and Deuce, a Top 40 pop album, was his second. A mix of rap and go-go was featured on Party Time. “8 Million Stories,” “AJ Scratch,” and “Basketball” were among the hits on Ego Trip.
Blow was “born again” in 1994 and got his redemption. On August 16, 2009, he was ordained as a minister. He acts like a rapper, DJ, worship leader, and licensed minister as the founder of The Hip Hop Church in Harlem.
In 2016, Blow was featured in Hip-Hop Evolution, a documentary about the evolution of hip hop. The series, hosted by Shad, a Canadian rapper and broadcaster, explored the evolution of hip-hop music through interviews with some of the genre’s most influential cultural figures. Russell Peters, Scot McFadyen, Sam Dunn, and Nelson George created the show. It received a Peabody Award in 2016 and an International Emmy Award for Best Arts Programming in 2017. Netflix has broadcasted the series.
