Gates chose to pursue a career in horseback riding. She didn’t have to work hard to achieve fame because she was born with it. Since she was a child, she has had a passion for horses and horseback riding. She then began to learn how to ride a horse. She represented North Ontario in the 2004 Ontario Winter Games with Team Lilly, which she formed out of the Idylwylde Curling Club.
From 2009 to 2011, she also represented Canada at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in second place. In 2010, the team’s best performance was in Sorel-Tracey, Quebec, where they won the bronze medal. Gates and her teammates Sarah Wilkes and Laura Crocker moved to Edmonton in 2012 to get some experience.
They later formed “Team Crocker.” Their team earned eight ranks in the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) at the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Pre-Trials, which were held in Kitchener, Ontario. Their team was chosen for the Canadian Olympic Curling Pre-Trials in 2017, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals.
