After graduating, Tharaldson did graduate work at North Dakota State University in Fargo and taught school in Leonard, North Dakota for two years.
In 1982, he purchased his first Super 8 motel in Valley City, N.D. From there, Tharaldson built his fortune by acquiring and building hotels across the country, eventually accumulating a portfolio of about 350 properties.
In 2006, he sold 130 hotels to Goldman Sachs for about $1.2 billion. He reinvested the money into land and commercial and residential developments.
Tharaldson is listed among the 1998 Forbes 400 Richest Americans. His organization has grown to be one of America’s largest developers of new hotels since its establishment. The assets are being managed by Diversified Asset Management based in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In an Interview with KVRR Tv, Tharaldson shared his secrets on being successful in business. He said that before it all started he developed a good work ethic while he was employed at a farm during his high school years where he earned $50 a month, including room and board.
Tharaldson then got into the insurance business, which he believes “really changed my life.”
He also talked about how a positive attitude helped impact his business moves; “I developed a real positive attitude about things and trying to be the best you can be. I’ve always shared the wealth with my employees. That’s probably the best thing I ever did and it made my company much greater.”
