A native of Armour, South Dakota, Emily VanDerWerff is an American journalist, podcaster, and author who primarily writes about television.

VanDerWerff graduated from South Dakota State University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Journalism. At the university, Emily wrote for the university’s student newspaper, The Collegian.

VanDerWerff joined Vox in June 2014, as their culture editor and later as the Critic at Large. Other than that, she hosts a true-crime parody podcast named Arden. She also runs Vox’s Primetime, a television history podcast.
