Her second marriage was in 1973 when she got married to soul singer-songwriter Bill Withers on January 17. Their marriage did not last long and a little over a year the couple had already started having problems.

Nicholas reported to authorities in November 1972, that Withers had beaten her up in her motel after she threatened to end their relationship over the telephone. Nicholas, however, refused to press charges. They filed for divorce in April 1974 and finalized in December 1974.

Her third and final marriage was in 1981 to CBS sports anchor Jim Hill. Nicholas and Jim had met in June 1980 at a Sacramento poetry reading. They got married on Valentine’s Day in 1981 but separated in October 1981.

Nicholas even filed for divorce but reconciled soon after. However, in 1984, the couple separated for the final time. Their divorce was finalized in 1987.

Nicholas attended Milan High School where she graduated from in 1961. While in high school, on August 25, 1960, Nicholas appeared on the cover of Jet magazine as a future school teacher prospect at the National High School Institute at Northwestern University.

She went on and joined the University of Michigan as a Pre-Law major but later switched her major to Latin-American politics, Spanish, and English. However, during her sophomore year, Nicholas withdrew from the University of Michigan and moved to New York City, where she started working for the J. Walter Thompson (JWT) advertising firm.

She later joined Tulane University, where she majored in Fine Arts. Nicholas still left the university early in order to join the Free Southern Theater (FST), during the Civil Rights Movement.

Nicholas made her television acting debut in 1968, with an episode of It Takes a Thief. From 1970 to 19ve 72, she had received 3 consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Drama TV Series. The nominations were for her role as Liz McIntyre on the ABC comedy-drama series Room 222.

Nicholas also won two Image Awards in 1976 for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, for her role as Beth Foster in Let’s Do It Again (1975).

In 1978, she played Olivia Ellis on Baby, I’m Back, a sitcom that aired on CBS. She also portrayed the Harriet DeLong in the cast of NBC/CBS’ In the Heat of the Night (1989–95). Nicholas wrote six episodes of the series, marking beginning her second career as a writer.
