Delano Floyd McCoury a native of Pennsylvania, is an American bluegrass musician. As the leader of the Del McCoury Band, he plays the guitar and sings lead vocals.

His sons Ronnie McCoury and Rob McCoury play mandolin and banjo respectively. McCoury was elected into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2011.

Del McCoury Music Career

In 1963, Del started off his career playing banjo, singing lead vocals, and playing rhythm guitar for Bill Monroe’s band Blue Grass Boys. He began performing with his sons in the 1980s. The group was joined by Fiddler Tad Marks and bass player Mike Brantley later in the early 1990s.

In 1992, Fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Mike Bub joined the group. Later in 2003, Del joined the Grand Ole Opry. Throughout his career, he has appeared at multiple festivals including; Bonnaroo, High Sierra, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Newport Folk Festival.

Del is the recipient of the 2010 lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts in the field of folk and traditional arts, including a stipend of $25,000. He has released several solo albums including; Livin’ on the Mountain, Our Kind of Grass, and Collector’s Special.

Del started his own festival in 2008 called DelFest. It is an annual bluegrass festival in Cumberland, Maryland, held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. In May 2012, the 5th DelFest took place with major bluegrass acts played such as; Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, and Infamous Stringdusters.
