When Rooney and Prince Markie Dee were signed by Sony Music, they formed the group Soul Convention. Sony approached him about signing a solo artist contract, but he declined. At Uptown Records, he went on to produce Mary J. Blige’s “True Love” and “Sweet Thing,” as well as Father MC’s “I’ll Do 4 U.”

Tommy Mottola hired him as a producer and later appointed him to Epic Records’ vice president of A&R in 1994. Rooney joined Crave Records as VP of A&R two years later. He was given another executive job at Casablanca Records, where he also wrote Lindsay Lohan’s song, “Rumors,” while continuing to work as a senior executive and producer at Sony. Also, he played keyboards and sang background vocals on the song, as well as producing it. His albums have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, with many of them selling over one million copies.

He was an executive producer on the MTV show “The Shop” and the VH1 show “Born to Diva.” Mr. Rooney’s Barbershop in Jamaica, Queens, New York, is the setting for “The Store.” Busta Rhymes, Diddy, and Fabolous have all been on the show to talk about the music industry, their careers, and just hang out. Aside from his position as executive producer of VH1’s “Born to Diva,” Rooney served as one of the panel judges on the program.

Rooney formed the Cory Rooney Group (CRG), which represents authors, creators, and two up-and-coming musicians. Music for television, fashion, and publishing are the main areas of focus for the business.
