Billy Dee Williams Biography

A native of New York, Billy Dee Williams who was born as William December Williams Jr. is an American actor, voice actor, and artist. 

William gained fame when he played a role in in the television movie, Brian’s Song in 1971 which earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor.

He is well known as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, first in the early 1980s, and nearly forty years later in The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, marking one of the longest intervals between onscreen portrayals of a character by the same actor in American film history.

Williams was born in New York City and grew up in Harlem together with his twin siste Loretta.

He is the son of Loretta Anne who was a West Indian-born elevator operator at the Lyceum Theatre and aspiring performer from Montserrat, and William December Williams, Sr. who is an African-American caretaker, with some Native American ancestry from Texas.

Dee is a married man, he has been married three times. Billy is currently married to Teruko Nakagami who he married in 1972. Previously he was married to Marlene Clark (m. 1968–1971) and Audrey Sellers(m. 1959–1963).

Dee has three children and two grandchildren. His first marriage was to Audrey Sellers in 1959. They were divorced some years later, after which he apparently became depressed.

Dee stated that “there was a period when I was very despondent, broke, depressed, my first marriage was on the rocks.” They had a son, Corey Dee Williams, born in the year 1960. In 1968, Billy Dee married model and actress Marlene Clark in Hawaii. They divorced in 1971. Billy Dee moved from New York City to California in 1971.

Billy married Teruko Nakagami on December 27, 1972. She brought a daughter, Miyako (Born in 1962), from her previous marriage to musician Wayne Shorter. Together they have a daughter, Hanako (Born in 1973).

In 1984 Dee bought a “Zen-like contemporary” home in the Trousdale Estates neighborhood of Beverly Hills, California; Dee sold it in 2012. Billy Dee filed for an amicable divorce from Nakagami in 1993, but they reconciled and were again living together by 1997.

Billy was arrested on January 30, 1996, after allegedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend, whom the police did not identify. He posted a US$50,000 bail. L.A. Police said the woman had minor bruises as well as scratches. The attorney’s office filed misdemeanor charges of the spousal battery along with dissuading a witness.

The woman later stated that the incident was her fault as well as hoped the police would drop the case. In a plea bargain, Dee was ordered to undergo 52 counseling sessions. In a 2019 interview, he says he never slapped or abused women.

In late 2019, Dee talked about his feminine side in an interview and used masculine and feminine pronouns to refer to himself. Media outlets widely speculated that he might be gender fluid, but Dee clarified that he was referring to anima as well as animus: the feminine side of men along with the masculine side of women in Jungian psychology.
