Her husband Kirk Douglas, whom she has been married to since 1954, died on February 5, 2020, at the age of 103 years. She became an American citizen in 1959.

Born in Germany, her family emigrated to Belgium when she was an adolescent and she became a citizen of Belgium. She went on with her education while there and later moved to Switzerland. Buydens finally moved to Paris where her job was of subtitling films since she was fluent in several languages.

Buydens and Kirk got married on May 29, 1954, after meeting in Paris. The couple had two sons together, Peter who was born on 23 November 1955 and Eric who was born on 21 June 1958. Their son Eric died on 6 July 2004 from an accidental drug overdose at the age of 46. Buydens and Kirk celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills.

Kirk also had two other sons from his previous marriage to his ex-wife Diana whom he was married to from 1943 to 1951. The two sons are Michael, an American actor and producer, and Joel, a film producer.
Kirk died at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on February 5, 2020, at age 103.

Buydens philanthropic ways came to be known while she was recovering from breast cancer. Together with six other survivors, she established “Research for Women’s Cancers”, which raised millions of dollars to help finance a research facility at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Buydens and her husband Kirk were also behind the establishment of “Harry’s Haven”, an Alzheimer’s disease unit at the Motion Picture & Television Fund Home in Woodland Hills. It is named after Kirk Douglas’s father.
They also made to rebuild playgrounds in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The couple also donated $15 million to help expand the facility with a new two-story Kirk Douglas Care Pavilion in celebration of Kirk’s 99th birthday.
